Growing Closer...Through Fellowship Ministries
The main focus of the Growing Closer team is fellowship, or "Koinonia." Koinonia means:
1.) Close association involving mutual interests and sharing: association, communion, fellowship, close relationship.
2.) Attitude of good will that manifests an interest in a close relationship: generosity, fellow-feeling, altruism.
Ministries Include:
Free Food Wednesdays- Every Wednesday night we open the church doors of FRC and our kitchen and serve somewhere around 150-200 people from our church and our community.
Sonshine Visitors- Every week two women from our church take an entire day and visit with those from our church and our community who are not able to otherwise "get out."
Coffee time on Sundays- After both services we serve coffee, tea, and goodies hoping to nurture conversation between old and new friends alike.
Women's Christmas Party- Every December anywhere between 80-100 of FRC's women gather and enjoy encouragement in faith from a guest speaker and a wonderful evening of fellowship.
Porch Visitors- Anytime someone visits our church, if they sign their name in our welcome folder, someone from our church welcomes them later that week with a smile and a plate of goodies to say "hello."
Potlucks- Among the best meals anywhere, an FRC potluck is a way of encouraging new and old relationships.
Funeral Receptions- When someone from our church or community passes away, we do our best to care for the family that grieves. One of the ways that we do that is by hosting a funeral reception so family and friends have a place to grieve well.
Date Night- On the third Friday of every month we open our church nursery and encourage husbands and wives to enjoy a date, without concern of the care and welfare of their precious children.
Acts 2:42 " They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship (Koinonia), to the breaking of bread and to prayer."
Going Deeper...Through Spirital Formation
Education Ministries Include:
Adult Sunday School- we are currently offering three adult Sunday School classes. One at 10:30a and two at 9:00a.
Children's Sunday School- We have Sunday school to nurture and encourage the young and emerging faith of our children. The first class is offered to preschool children and grade levels continue through High School classes.
Kid's Club- On Wednesday nights after "Free Food Wednesday", while activities for all ages are offered, we host a Kid's Club ministry. Singing, Crafts, snacks and stories are among a few of the
activities, all to encourage the faith of children up to age 9.
Home Groups- On the first and third Sundays of the month, small groups from FRC meet in homes around the community. The purposes of our
Home Groups ministry are three-fold:
1.) To connect people in smaller communities of faith
2.) To provide a place and people for visitors to connect more personally and relationally to folks from FRC.
3.) To deepen our faith through content of a study.
Ladies Bible Studies- "Women of the Word"- On Wednesday morning and Mondays evening, ladies from FRC meet in small groups to share life and deepen faith.
Nursery Ministries- Every Sunday morning, Wednesday morning, during Home Groups and various other ministry nights, our nursery is available for children between the ages of 0-3. It is a clean, safe and nurturing place where our children are loved and cared for,
Block Party & Outdoor Service-we host an outdoor service. It's a way for us to welcome and encourage our neighbors and community members to enter into the worship life of our congregation.
Vacation Bible School- "VBS" has long been a wonderful opportunity for us to serve the young families of our community. For one week every
summer we welcome children of all ages into our church to learn about Jesus, to sing songs, play games, enjoy crafts, and establish relationships with peers and adult leaders.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Worship Ministries Include:
Sunday Worship- We have two worship services, 9:00am and 10:30am.
The 9:00 service has often been called "traditional" and worships primarily with hymns and praise songs with the aid of a piano and organ. The 10:30a service, often called the "contemporary" service is led by a worship team and worships primarily through singing of songs and hymns.
Choir- During the Fall, Winter and Spring seasons
our first service is blessed to have a participating adult choir.
Worship Team- Our worship team, primarily used during the second service, is made up of hosts of instrumentalists and vocalists as well as technologically skilled people

Noel was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, and a neighboring town, Flushing. He was baptized and came to faith as a United Methodist. Growing up, he was heavily involved in music and academics. Noel met his wife, Heidi, in the music department at Hope College. Graduating with a double major in music and philosophy, Noel worked as a case manager and a church music director before he and Heidi moved to Pasadena, California, where he completed his Master of Divinity and began a PhD in preaching and the arts at Fuller Theological Seminary. In November 2010, Heidi gave birth to their twin son and daughter, Jude and Hazel. Having served for several years as a worship and music pastoral assistant in Southern California, Noel was ordained a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the PC(USA) in July 2011 upon his call to become Minister of Worship and Discipleship at FRC. Noel and Heidi are excited to be living in the Northwest and joining a vibrant community of believers in Oak Harbor. They are expecting a baby girl in March of this year.

Jon graduated in 1999 with chemistry major and a biology/Spanish minor(s). Kristyn graduated in 2001 with an education/language arts composite major. Jon has since received an M. Div from Western Theological Seminary and is currently working on a Masters of Theology from Regent College in Vancouver, B.C. Jon and Kristyn have three daughters: Lydia, Tabitha and Miriah! Jon and Kristyn are eager to participate in proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ in this community and the world with First Reformed Church.

I am passionate about Children's Ministries and feel blessed to be a vital part of influencing the lives of our young children growing up to know and love the Lord. I have an amazing husband, Nate, and two boys, Connor & Cooper who fill our lives with love and laughter. Our daughter, Jennie-Flore, is seven months old and we are patiently waiting to bring her home from Children of the Promise in Haiti."

Joann Hoover was born and raised in the Midwest. She and her husband Mike (retired Navy) had two boys. They are, Jim, who died as a young man and Richard, who is married and with his wife has two children. Joann graduated from Evangelical Hospital School of Nursing in Milwaukee Wisconsin and has worked in varied areas in hospital nursing, such as labor/delivery, pediatrics, other specialty areas and geriatric settings in long term care, as well as supervisory positions. Retiring three years ago from Island Hospital in Anacortes, she was the Community Health Resources Coordinator, which entails working with the community to know and understand their health care and the resources to assist them. She became interested and took the training in Parish Nursing during that time hoping to begin such a program at FRC. This is coming to fruition through the Health Ministry developed at FRC this year. Joann hopes to promote HEALTH with this ministry at FRC through the following:
Health advisor
Educator of health issues
Advocate/resource person
Liaison to health and community resources
Teacher of volunteers and developer of support groups
Healer of body mind spirit and community
(Canadian Association for Parish Nurse Ministry - 2005)

"It's hard to believe that I have been working at FRC since the summer of 2007. (Time flies when you love your job!) While I am originally from Connecticut, I am happy to have called Whidbey Island my home for the past 5 years. I am currectly a student at Liberty University working on my degree in Psychology with a focus on Christian Counseling. Each day I thank God for the oppourtunity to interact with the members of FRC as well as new visitors, and the oppourtunity to serve God and the Church through the management of the office. I also enjoy the opportunity of teaching Sunday School here at FRC! If you don't see me in the office, you will probably find me at Starbucks, studying, or hiking in the woods or on the beach!"

"What I like most about my job is knowing that God's children will be able to Worship and learn about God in a clean and healthy environment, which fufills my purpose in the living and active body of Christ. My hope is to inject the Holy Spirit into the younger generation using skateboarding and other extreme sports as a tool or an instrument in the furthering of God's Kingdom."

Our Call:
By the grace of God the Father,
the guidance of the Holy Spirit,
for the glory of Jesus Christ,
we the family of God
at FRC in Oak Harbor,
seek to be the very presence
of Jesus Christ
in the world.
Statement of Faith:
1.) We believe in one God, creator of heaven and earth, who always existed in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
2.) We believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary. We believe in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His death on the cross as a payment for our sins, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory as Lord of Lords, and King of Kings .
3.) We believe in the Holy Spirit as one who lives in believers enabling them to live a Godly life.
4.) We believe the Bible to be the inspired Word of God. God inspired the writers so that their message was His message, accurate, authoritative, authentic, and reliable.
5.) We believe that salvation for lost and sinful human beings is found only in our Lord Jesus Christ. This salvation, comes by the renewing power of the Holy Spirit in a person's life.
6.) We believe in a final resurrection at the end of time when every person will bow before God and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.
7.) We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ready or not here it comes, 2012! New goals are made, high hopes in the air, this year is the year that _____ is finally going to be accomplished. I’ll check back with you in a couple weeks to see how these goals are going. Last year my goal was to live my life simply to the lyrics of my grandmother’s favorite song, Give Me Jesus. My family spent last new years singing this together when she passed away. I encourage you consider the lyrics as you start thinking about New Year resolutions. As we live in between the seasons of remembrance and looking forward to what is to come let us not forget to abide in what is right now, You can have all this world, Just give me Jesus.
Blessings,
Amy Jansen, Youth Director
